This is the first complete digital edition in facsimile of the seven printed books of vihuela music published in Spain between 1536 and 1576. Included are books by the Spanish vihuelists Milán, Narváez, Mudarra, Fuenllana, Pisador, Valderrábano and Daza in the one CD-ROM. The reader can directly access each piece from the general index of the seven books and view colour reproductions of all of the pages containing red tablature in the originals, allowing the vocal line to be followed. A rich and almost unknown repertory for voice and vihuela is thus brought within easy reach of the reader for the first time. This product, which also includes an extensive study by Gerardo Arriga, was put together by carefully selecting the pages from the existing copies held at the Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid and the El Escotial Library that were found to be in the best state of conservation. Errors in the pagination of some of the originals and some of the modern facsimile editions in paper have also been amended. A unique edition of these books, presented in an ideal format for musicians and musicologists alike, which will further the study and facilitate the consultation of one of the most important repertoires of Spanish Music.
